Assesments

Our team of speech and language therapists at Manchester SLT assess both adults and children, and treat a variety of speech, language and communication difficulties. Our team will also assess and treat different aspects of eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties.

An initial speech and language therapy assessment will be carried out as well as case history; this will determine a route for speech and language therapy. This will also be a chance for the client to share any concerns and main aspects they feel they would like to work on. In this initial speech and language therapy assessment, a plan for the course of speech and language therapy will be made, including, short and long term aims for the client.

Speech and language therapy assessments can be both formal and informal and will depend upon patient's needs and abilities.

Formal assessments

Formal speech and language therapy assessments allow speech and language therapists at Manchester SLT to assess a client's speech and language skills and match them with speech and language abilities expected at certain ages and stages. Formal speech and language therapy assessments calculate a standardised score and can help the speech and language therapist to determine the severity of the problem and plan for therapy accordingly.

Informal assessments

Informal speech and language therapy assessments do not produce a standardised score and allow the speech and language therapist to tailor the assessment to the individual. The speech and language therapist is then able to take a client's needs and abilities into account, which is sometimes hard to do with formal speech and language therapy assessments.
