What are voice disorders?
A voice disorder is defined as a deviation in the pitch, quality or volume of an individual's voice from what is classed as normal for their age or gender.
There are several types of voice disorder, which can range in severity from mild to severe. Different types of voice disorders will be caused by different conditions which can be classed in to three categories:
Organic voice disorders are caused by structural anomalies, neurological disorders or endocrinological disease.
Psychogenic voice disorders are any difficulties with an individual's voice which are caused by psychological conditions e.g. trauma or anxiety.
Behavioural voice disorders are the result of vocal misuse or abuse and can be caused by excessive shouting, screaming or over use of the voice due to the individuals profession e.g. a teacher or singer.
Having a voice disorder will affect an individual's ability to communicate and can impact on their social and emotional status.
What problems caused by voice disorders can speech and language therapy help with?
There are many difficulties caused by voice disorders which speech and language therapy can help with, these include:
- Communication problems - difficulties expressing verbal, written or non-verbal communication.
- Voice disorders - any difficulty with the pitch, volume or quality of voice.
- Speech disorders - any difficulties with the production of speech sounds.
- Eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties
Speech and language therapy will additionally support and help the individual with any stress or emotional difficulties experienced as a result of their voice disorder.
How can Speech and Language Therapy help individuals with speech disorders?

Our speech and language therapists at Manchester SLT will carry out an initial assessment to determine the type and severity of voice disorder the individual is experiencing. Following an initial assessment and discussion with the individual about their expectations of treatment, an individualised treatment plan will be created.
There are a number of treatment options available for individuals with voice disorders, the type of treatment given will vary depending on the type and severity of the individual's voice disorder and also their overall abilities. Each treatment plan will be tailored to the specific needs and abilities of the individual.
Treatment options for voice disorders may include:
- Voice therapy
- Vocal hygiene programme
- Breathing exercises
- Speech exercises
- Alternative and Augmentative Communication (any form of communication other than speech)
- Individual treatment
- Group treatment
- Advice and support for the individual, family members / carers and others involved in their care
Alternative forms of communication may be explored for individuals who have limited speech output or no speech at all due to their voice disorder. Alternative and Augmentative Communication will aim to maximise the individual's ability to communicate.
For individuals who have a voice disorder as a result of a laryngectomy (removal of the larynx) following cancer, will need support from the therapist regarding alternative ways of communicating. The speech and language therapist will support the individual and their family before and after their operation in order to prepare them and help them adjust to their preferred method of communication. The speech and language therapist will provide emotional support for the individual and their family due the high amount of stress this process may cause.
